Paignton and Brixham

Paignton and Brixham area

Paignton and Brixham locality is a popular retirement area, with a high number of retired people. In all, there are 72,600 people registered with a GP, and due to the amount of elderly residents, there is a prevalence of patients with several complex, long-term conditions. There are nine GP practices in the area, all of which are member practices of South Devon and Torbay CCG, and there are two community hospitals – one in Paignton and one in Brixham – both with Minor Injuries Units. There are also many care homes.

In line with all of the CCG’s localities, as a result of feedback received at a number of public community engagement events in the winter of 2013, the Paignton and Brixham locality team is developing its community services – including GP services, community nursing, physiotherapy, social care services, and services for carers.

The locality is also planning to develop a Living Well hub of services to support the population in staying well and taking responsibility for their own health. Like the Torquay locality, it is working to provide additional support to manage the 2 percent most vulnerable patients at risk of unplanned admissions. This is being achieved by joining up primary and community services with the acute hospital (Torbay Hospital) and ambulance service. Support for the large number of care homes is a priority, to improve the quality of care for patients.

There is also a Paignton and Brixham locality Facebook group, where local issues, events and topics are highlighted to the public: Paignton and Brixham.
