Newton Abbot

Newton Abbot area

Newton Abbot locality takes in the market town of Newton Abbot, the adjoining town of Kingsteignton and the surrounding rural communities, which include Abbotskerswell, Denbury, Chudleigh, Bovey Tracey, Ipplepen and Kingskerswell. It has six GP teaching practices, all of which are member practices of South Devon and Torbay CCG. They serve a registered population of about 51,600. There is also a new community hospital in Newton Abbot, which has a Minor Injuries Unit, and an older community hospital in Bovey Tracey.

The current priorities for the Newton Abbot Locality, identified at public engagement events held in winter 2013, are focused on three main areas of development:

  • Improved communication – all six practices use the same electronic health record system, enabling them to work together and link to other health and care providers so that they improve the care people receive. The locality team wants to create a system in which people will only need to tell their story once.
  • Improved local/community delivery of care – by linking local services (GPs, community nurses, social care, voluntary services, hospital, district council, carers and care homes) to create a hub that supports improved wellbeing for the frail elderly in the area, ensuring that the services deliver what matters most to the person.
  • To ensure local people have access to knowledge and information that support wellbeing through self-care.

There is also a Newton Abbot locality Facebook group, where local issues, events and topics are highlighted to the public: Newton Abbot.
