Coastal area

The Coastal locality covers Teignmouth, Dawlish and the surrounding areas, with 35,000 patients registered with a GP. The locality population is noticeably older than the national average, having more than a quarter aged over 65 years old. There are four GP practices in the area, all of which are member practices of South Devon and Torbay CCG, and there is a community hospitals at Dawlish and Teignmouth.

Members of the Coastal team are working to build on services and structures already in place, making them work more effectively, as well as improving services delivered to patients and reducing reliance on secondary care.

They are also aiming to develop more joined-up community services, improving access and the health and wellbeing of local people.

In January 2016, following a 14-week public consultation, the MIUs at Teignmouth and Dawlish hospitals were combined to create one MIU for the Coastal locality. It is based at Dawlish and open 8am-8pm, seven days a week, with x-ray available 1.30pm-5pm, Monday to Friday, with 12 rehab beds at Teignmouth.‚Äč

Further changes, such as developing joined-up delivery of community services and reducing duplication, in areas such as GP services, community nursing, physiotherapy, social care services and services for carers, have continued to be developed.
