South Devon and Torbay Community Grant Fund

The South Devon and Torbay Community Grants Fund is an initiative to help people make a difference in their community.  It provides small grants (between £25 and £1,000) for community-led schemes to improve health and wellbeing.

The Fund supports schemes that:

  •   promote physical activity
  •   encourage people to look after themselves better (‘self-care’) and    live more positive and fulfilled lives
  •   promotion emotional health and wellbeing
  •   support recovery from drug or alcohol misuse
  •    reduce social isolation by connecting people within communities.

Schemes should benefit a group of people rather than just one individual.

We especially welcome applications from individuals or new groups who have a good idea to benefit their community.

On 12 September 2016 in Torquay Museum members of the public joined statutory and voluntary and community sector employees to plan the plan the process and timescale, agree how the scheme will work in practice, learn from the experience in the room and recruit volunteers to be involved in next steps. There was very useful insight from attendees and widespread support for the scheme.

CommunityGrants.pngReflections from the day:

Opportunity to review the feedback & reflect further on the process        Build on what is already in place but learn from them what to avoid
There is lots of intelligence around – make use of it        Need to get going quickly
Housing colleagues can help to promote & support relevant applications locally        Make sure the process is simple & straightforward
Engage the whole community        Engage the whole community
Do not underestimate the amount of support needed at grass roots level to make it work   Be committed to listen to & act on what people say
Keep the language accessible & simple  Test out documentation with existing groups
Ensure it is bottom up not top down  Involve ‘real’ people from the community
