Volunteering in health

Information to enhance the health of Teignbridge people in need is on offer at two drop-in events.

Volunteering in Health, a Teignmouth-based charity aiming to improve the wellbeing of local people, is hosting the two events.

There will be nurses doing blood tests, weight checks, diabetes tests, pharmacists doing medicines reviews, pressure ulcer advice, a dietician, podiatrist advice, information about home-delivery food service, and Shopmobility.

Michelle Willocks-Watts, manager of Volunteering in Health, said: “We’re working as part of a team with the NHS and Devon County Council to try to reach those people who often fall under the radar and don’t want to bother anyone.

“We know that having health problems can be worrying, difficult and stressful at times, for the person concerned and for their family members.

“We proactively help people avoid hospital admissions by giving them extra support, particularly when they feel isolated. We want to make contact with them and help them stay well by letting them know about the range of services available to them.

“It might be that we could put them in touch with a community nurse, an occupational therapist, a voluntary sector support worker, or a community care worker. Whatever is appropriate for them.

"These events are a way of us telling more people about how the service works and making sure as many people as possible know what is available to them.

“So I’d urge people to drop in at these events and find out what can help them in their local area. The information they get on the day will help them keep well and strong at home.”

Volunteering in Health helps patients, carers and volunteers. It covers Teignmouth, Dawlish, Chudleigh, Bishopsteignton, Holcombe, and Shaldon.

The drop-in events are at Dawlish Methodist church hall on Monday 18 May, 10am-1pm, and Teignmouth Methodist church hall on Tuesday 19 May, 10am-4pm.

Anyone wanting assistance in getting to the events can contact 01626 774484 to book community transport, which is available subject to availability.
