Pressure on Emergency Department

Torbay and South Devon NHS Foundation Trust continues to experience extreme pressures on its urgent and emergency services. Due to the on-going severity of the current pressures, the Trust has taken the decision to temporarily postpone routine, non-urgent operations and outpatient appointments for the next few days. Any patient who is affected by this is being contacted directly to rebook their routine appointment for another date.

Mairead McAlinden, chief executive of Torbay and South Devon NHS Foundation Trust, said: “This winter your health and social care services have been under greater pressure than ever. I sincerely apologise to anyone who has experienced a longer wait for care or who has not received the excellent care our staff want to and work hard to give. There are times when we simply could not give the best care to everyone coming through our doors, and I am deeply sorry for that.

“In our Emergency Department in Torbay Hospital, some people have to wait much longer than the 4-hour standard before we can complete the treatment they need and either admit them to a hospital bed, arrange the next step in their treatment and care or meet their needs so they can safely go home.

“Taking the decision to postpone planned routine surgery and outpatient appointments is not one we have taken lightly. However, our absolute focus is to prioritise the continued safe delivery of emergency care to those who are most in need of it.”

Anyone who does not have serious injuries should attend their local minor injury unit. To help ease the pressure on the Emergency Department, X-ray facilities are being concentrated at fewer locations which will enable the service to be available for longer. Opening times for local MIUs, including X-ray opening hours, from Thursday 10 March, are shown below:

Anybody who does need emergency care must still either ring 999 or come into the Emergency Department. If their need is not an emergency they should consider which service best meets their need including a pharmacy, their GP, a minor injury unit or phoning 111.
