Leatside is Outstanding

Leatside Surgery staff celebrate their Outstanding rating
Staff at Leatside Surgery celebrated a special Christmas gift when they were awarded a prestigious Outstanding rating.

The Care Quality Commission (CQC), which regulates and inspects health and social care services in England, gave the rating after undertaking in-depth inspections of Leatside in October.

An Outstanding rating is rare in itself, but Leatside’s is particularly impressive, having received 10 stars out of a possible 11 – putting it among the best in the country.

The CQC inspectors praised a wide range of services, including the practice’s work with Caring Town Totnes.

Dr Andrew Frankland, the senior partner at Leatside, said: “This is a fantastic achievement. We’re absolutely delighted. It reflects the hard work our staff undertake every week in our practice. They’re a credit to the community.

“We work hard to maintain the good health of all out patients, as well as a range of initiatives for the people of Totnes, and we will continue to do so.”

GPs at the practice provide daily medical support to inpatients at Totnes Community Hospital, and one specialist GP recently expanded the role.
They have also supported a programme offering sanctuary to refugees and asylum-seekers who want to live in Totnes.

Professor Steve Field, the CQC’s chief inspector of general practice, said: “I am delighted to highlight the exceptional service at Leatside Surgery. The GPs and staff have demonstrated a real commitment to their patients.

“All of this hard work and dedication pays off in making a real difference for their patients – which is why we have found this practice to be Outstanding.”

Sarah Wollaston, MP for Totnes and a former GP, said: “Many congratulations to Leatside on the outstanding rating by the CQC. My best wishes to everyone at the surgery on their fantastic achievement.”

Leatside’s teamwork within the community was reflected in its nomination for General Practice Team of the Year in the HEART UK NHS Health Check Awards 2015.

Leatside’s team includes nine GP partners, a strategic business manager, operations manager, nursing team, pharmacist, administrative team, and training doctors and nurses.
