Dartmouth MIU temporarily suspended

Dartmouth Community Hospital’s minor injuries unit has been temporarily suspended due to staff shortages. A number of the unit’s long-service nurses have recently retired, so despite repeated attempts at recruitment the service has not been able to provide consistent, reliable and safe staffing levels.
Torbay and Southern Devon Health and Care Trust therefore made the decision to close the unit until replacement staff are recruited.
Simon Tapley, director of commissioning at South Devon and Torbay Clinical Commissioning Group, which is responsible for the vast majority of healthcare in the area, said: “We very much regret the temporary closure of the minor injuries unit and the inconvenience it will cause local people. However, safe staffing is essential and we fully support the Trust in its efforts to ensure its minor injuries services are safe and sustainable. We look forward to the service re-opening as soon as possible.”
Patients are being asked to use the minor injuries units at Brixham Community Hospital (four miles away via ferry, open 8am-6pm, Monday to Friday) or Totnes Hospital (14 miles away, open 8am-9pm, seven days a week). Dartmouth Medical Practice has agreed to provide non-emergency care where it’s not feasible for anyone to travel to Brixham or Totnes. To use this service phone the surgery on 01803 832212, requesting a minor injury appointment
