Patient Participation Groups

Patient Participation Groups (PPGs)

A good partnership between a Patient Participation Group and its GP practice can help the practice develop, promote important health issues to patients, and enable patients and carers to influence their how their local care services work. Every patient and carer should be aware that a Patient Group exists in their GP surgery, what it’s for and how they can get involved, and make sure that their views are heard and responded to. For information about how South Devon and Torbay CCG is working with local PPGs, please contact Jo Curtis.

We are fortunate to have two national organisations promoting good practice in patient participation with GP practices - The Patients Association and the National Association for Patient Participation (N.A.P.P). The Patients Association has been supporting the development of PPGs in Devon, Cornwall and Isles of Scilly over the last few years. They have made productive links with the University of Plymouth nursing department and students now routinely join PPGs, offering a set of skills that are often hard for PPGs to come by.

A PPG information and resource pack has been developed by the Patients Association and is available here. The pack includes templates for Terms of Reference, agendas and posters, as well as sample confidentiality agreements and guidance on responsibilities of members.

The National Association for Patient Participation (N.A.P.P) has a range of resources available to PPGs, most of which are available for a membership fee. We recommend that this is paid for by the practice.

Working with GP practices to promote Patient Online

In conjunction with the NHS England programme Patient Online, N.A.P.P has launched its latest toolkit to help PPGs and their GP practice work effectively together. This guide will help PPGs discuss online GP services with their practice and consider ways in which to support the uptake of online services. The guide was launched at N.A.P.P’s annual conference on 11 June 2016 and is available on N.A.P.P’s website.

PPG Networks

A partnership of representatives from various PPGs across Devon have set up a group to look at how PPGs might work together to learn from each other and influence commissioning decisions. This is a relatively new group and it is still in development.

As a first step the group felt they needed to know more about other PPGs in the county. To help to do this and with the support of NEW Devon CCG and South Devon and Torbay CCG the group put together a survey that has been sent to all practice managers to share with their PPGs. If you have not yet seen the survey then you can complete it online here.
